New Roommate

Jamie and I have been getting along so well, we decided to take a big step in our relationship by adopting a baby.

Our friend David's cat recently had kittens, and we were all set to pick it up in a few weeks. Last weekend, however, my boss came to the door and informed me that she had a kitten for us. Excited, we ran outside to discover a newborn kitten abandoned in a sack of carvão (charcoal) outside her door.

The neighbors thought it was hilarious that we were going to try to save it, and kept calling it a gato mato or gato bravio, but we thought he was adorable and took him home. We didn't expect him to survive the night, but we fed him infant formula every hour, and he pulled through against all odds.

We've had our little bundle of joy for a little over a week, and he has opened his eyes and is cutting teeth. But he's not a normal kitten.

As it turns out, gato bravio refers not to a wild cat (as we thought), but to a wildcat. As in, not a house cat. This little guy has these creepy long toes, climbs everything, and has giant, nocturnal-animal eyes. We have no idea what he's gonna grow up to be. He's already a holy terror, and might grow up to weigh 20 pounds. But maybe we won't need a guard dog...
D'awwwww...

In other news:

We are officially settled in in Mariri: the school is FINALLY adding a bathroom to our house, I sewed some slightly lopsided curtains for my room, and the window screens are going to be hung. Using the community bathroom for two months made me feel like I was back in the dorm (#joneslove). Except there are urinals, buckets of water, and occasional reptiles.

We had our first real visitors last weekend; we took them up the mountain during a thunderstorm. It was great, and I only slipped and fell down the mountain once.
Paz,

Elizabeth
